Wake up sleepy little Huatulco (wha-tool-co), there is a new kid in town: Secrets Huatulco Resort and Spa! Secrets Huatulco is nestled in Conejos Bay and is sure to shake things up a bit in this quaint and quiet tourist area of southern Mexico. It’s set between the Sierra Madre mountains and the Pacific Ocean, located only a $6usd taxi ride away from the port town of Santa Cruz and the inland town of La Crucecita. It is just a 30 minute ride from the small airport of Huatulco (HUX).
If you follow us on twitter or facebook, it’s no secret we are big fans of the Secrets Resorts and Spas and this property is no exception. Just one month after the opening of Secrets Huatulco we were guests of the resort and boy, were we IMPRESSED!
One thing we enjoy about all Secrets Resorts is they are adults only, a great option for singles and couples who are not traveling with children. Though all of the Secrets resorts have amazing features, we enjoyed the “beach chic” atmosphere, the incredible ocean views throughout the property and the amazing spa.
What sets this Secrets Spa by Pevonia apart from the others are the dramatic views with floor to ceiling windows in treatment suites and the bay views from the relaxation area and hydrotherapy pool.
Another unique feature of Secrets Huatulco are the 33 Preferred Club Junior Swimout Suites in front of 3 of the 6 buildings. They have a shared lap pool with only those staying on the first floor of those buildings. Talk about Unlimited-Luxury® and getting away from it all! Over 75% of the property’s 399 suites have 100% unobstructed ocean views. We loved dining and having drinks on our terrace while enjoying “our” pool with a view!
Most all of the suites are a little over 500 square ft. with a love seat sitting area, desk, 26″ flat screen tv, dvd player, mp3/ipod dock with alarm clock. They have thought to include everything you need in a suite: stocked minibar with water, juices, soft drinks and beer, coffee maker, double sink vanity, scales and hairdryer, make up mirror, digital safe, closet with robe and slippers, iron and ironing board, an amazing rainfall spa shower, jacuzzi tub and a separate water closet (toilet).
Among the toiletries included are Gilchrist Soames aloe vera soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and 15 SPF sunscreen. Preferred Club amenities also include toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, razor and comb, mini liquor bottles, nuts, candy and chips as well as lounge access and wi-fi.
With 8 dining options plus the coffee shop, Coco Cafe serving desserts and sandwiches and 24 hour room service, one could not possibly go to bed hungry.
At Tamarindo, the Mexican restaurant, you will not find burritos as big as your head. Instead, the chef has created a very special menu featuring Oaxacan specialties (Oaxaca is the state where Huatulco is located) including such delicacies as chapulines (fried grasshoppers) and empanadas de escamoles (turnovers with ant lavrae from agave and maguey plants) for the adventurous foodies like my husband!! Being not so adventurous, I preferred the main courses with mole sauces and the Oaxacan chocolate dessert plate. The restaurant also features original Mexican artwork showcasing a Day of the Dead theme with larger than life murals and Catrinas.

Even the burgers poolside at the Barefoot Grill were chin drippin’ good!
The Market Cafe buffet offers a wide variety of international dishes and cooked to order steaks, fish and pasta entrees too. There are also seafood, French, Italian and Asian, inspired restaurants to whet your appetite.
Speaking of activities, the Entertainment Team is on the go all day and night with a variety of pool and beach games, bicycle tours, tennis, yoga and Zumba, archery and rifle shooting, cultural and culinary demonstrations as well as nightly themed shows. Each night a Sundial- the daily activities paper is delivered to your suite to keep you up to speed on what is going on, when and where.
Movies are shown in the lobby near the Rendezvous Bar and DVDs can be borrowed from the concierge to enjoy in your suite. At night there are also live bands performing at the SkyBar, a great place to meet for pre and post dinner drinks. The place to meet late night is the Desires Lounge.

The only downside we could find at Secrets Huatulco is it can be very challenging for those who have mobility issues, though the hotel is working toward making it easier. Also some staff members are learning English, so be patient with them. After all, you are visitors to their country.
So…. our advice is:
