When I was planning my trip to London one of the MUST do on my dream list was to experience a proper English tea. Jonathan Epstein aka @EpsteinTravels, President of Celebrated Experiences helped make my dream come true by arranging a visit to The Milestone Hotel, a 5 star, award winning, luxury boutique hotel.
General Manager, Andrew Pike shared with me the secrets to what makes The Milestone Hotel so very special. It has 44 deluxe bedrooms, 12 luxury suites and 6 apartments which are all uniquely decorated- no 2 suites are alike, all include complimentary wi-fi and twice daily maid service. Many of the suites provide a gorgeous view of Kensington Palace Gardens. Several of the suites I visited were expecting guests and they had welcome fruit plates or special celebration cakes! There were fresh flowers in all the rooms along with bottles of mineral water and a fully stocked mini bar. There is also a board room which makes the property suitable for business meetings.
For tech lovers the suites are appointed with Bose I-pod docking stations, DVD/CD players (there’s an in house library of titles to borrow), on demand movies and of course, flat screen televisions. There are also mobile phone rentals available to guests.
If you’re like me, it’s the little things that impress me. The Milestone won’t disappoint you. The bathrooms are spacious with special lighting. You will also find robes and slippers (child-sized too), hairdryers, phones, a variety of luxurious Penhaligon’s toiletries and floating candles. The signature red carnations are found throughout the hotel. There is soap selection on arrival and nightly turndown service too. Each guest is escorted to their suite by a butler, with a tour of the hotel enroute, who is on duty 24 hours. There is even a chauffeured Bentley to take you around the town!
For wellness there is no need to leave The Milestone. There’s a well equipped fitness center with a nice variety of machines, a trainer and a resistance pool. If a spa experience is your desire, you will find the spa treatment room for massages and body treatments. If you prefer walking or running outdoors, the hotel is just across the street from the paths of Kensington Gardens. The concierge has maps of the paths.
The Milestone has several dining options. The formal dining room, Chenestons serves lunch and dinner, is also suitable for an intimate wedding reception and The Oratory, a private dining room for parties of 8. The relaxing Stables Bar (the original carriage house) is perfect to meet friends for drinks and snacks. There is the sunny Conservatory, perfect for breakfast and less formal parties. Because of its close proximity to the Kensington Gardens, the hotel also offers luxurious picnics in the park, seasonal of course!
The Park Lounge serves an Afternoon Tea which has been recognized by the UK Council with an Award of Excellence “for outstanding quality and consistently high standards in tea service”. I had the pleasure of experiencing my first “proper English tea” here with my British friends, Jan and Gary. What an experience! We were served 3 tiers of delicious accompaniments to our choice of teas. A variety of scones with Devonshire clotted cream-another first for me, finger sandwiches- including a chicken salad rolled in almonds (my FAVORITE) and scrumdeliumptious (take that, spell check!) bite sized pastries. This may not sound like much, but we were stuffed! So stuffed we decided to take a stroll through Kensington Gardens to “walk it off”. As we were leaving we had a nice chat with the doorman who showed us the milestone for which the hotel is named. Every staff member we encountered was very attentive and personable. It is no wonder to me why it has received so many awards from travel publications and the industry.
We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and I have to say,
The Milestone is definitely my cup of tea!
